Continental Air Micronesia links five of the seven countries and territories shown on our map of Micronesia: The Marshall Islands, The Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, The Northern Mariana Islands and the Republic of Palau. Micronesia means small islands.

The history of Micronesia begins 3,000 years ago when the first canoes traveled to the islands from South East Asia. Much later the culture of Micronesia was influenced by Spain, Germany, Japan and the United States.

The Federated States of Micronesia grew out of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands created after World War II. The Marshall Islands and Palau seceded from the Trust Territory to form countries of their own, while the Northern Marianas joined the United States.

Kiribati and Nauru formerly had ties to Australia or Britain. It’s a fascinating area, worthy of your attention.

Solomon Islands – is a vast archipipelago of 922, 347 of them inhabited. It stretches from Papau New Guinea toward Fiji along the northeastern edge of Meanesia. During WWII great battles were fought around what is now Honiara, the capital city on the island of Guadalcanal.

Funafuti is Tuvalu’s main business and it is place that has the only international airport and hotel on Tuvalu. This is known as an endangered country, caused by global warming.

Wallis and Futuna – is a little known French territory between Fiji and Samoa. These islands fell under French colonial rule in 1887 after Catholic missionaries converted the Polynesian population. The population is around 14,000 but a greater number of expatriate Wallisian live and work in nickel-rich New Caledonia. Futuna’s neighbor, Alofi, has no permanent inhabants, although locals have gardens there.

Tokelau – The 3 Tokelau atolls, Atafu, Fakaofo and Nukunonu, lie 500 kilometers north of Samoa in the center South Pacific.

These islands present a picture of utter tranquility – no roads, airports, large resorts, restaurants, or bars, just 1,500 Polynesia people living in harmony with nature as they have always done. Fishing tends the coconut plantations, and raising pigs are the main pursuits.

A British protectorate since 1889, Tokelau, fell under New Zealand administration in 1925. Now the administration is run by local councils.

Samoa – Independent Samoa – or Western Samoa as it was called until 1997 – lies in the heart of Polynesia between Tahiti and Fiji. American Samoa is the 100 km to the east.

The two main islands, Upolu and Savaii, are volcanic and lush with verdant rainforest sweeping up the steep slopes from dazzling white coral beaches. The smaller inhabited islands of Manono and Apolima also appear on our Samoa map.

Samoa’s capital, Apia, is a laid back South Seas town with churches, trading houses, hotels and markets lining the harbor.

Samoa and America Samoa have strong traditional cultures dating back 3,000 years.

Surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and hiking are favorite activities.

American Samoa – is the only United States territory south of the equator. They supply half the canned tuna sold in American supermarkets.

The bulk of the population lives on the island of Tutuila, especially around Pago Pago Harbor and most of American’s Samoa’s hotels, the government, and community college are also here.

Tutuila is a scenic high volcanic island with vertical mountainsides tumbling into the sea. The islands of Ofu, Olosega and Tau are even more spectacular than Tutuila and large parts of them are now part of American Samoa National Park.

Niue – is a one-island dependency of New Zealand between the Kingdom of Tonga and Rarotonga in the Cooks Island.

The coral cliffs surrounding the island have been deeply eroded by the waves, creating the chasms and caves which are Niue’s greatest attractions.

Under 1,400 people live on Niue (compared to the 20,000 Niueans resident in New Zealand). Niue Island has a few hotels and resorts to serve the visitor and basic services such as restaurants, rentals cars and dive shops are available.

French Polynesia and Tahiti – French Polynesia and its main island Tahiti are in the eastern South Pacific, halfway between California and Australia. Polynesia means many islands.

The soaring silhouettes of Moorea and Bora and Bora have graced a 1,000 brochures and this region has long been recognized as one of the scenic wonders of the world.

Most Tahiti vacation cruises and Tahiti honeymoon packages begin in the lively capital, Papeete from Auckland.

Our French Polynesia map illustrates the five great archipelagoes of this large French territory, the Society, Austral, Tuamotu, Gambier and Marquesas islands.

The Society Islands are divided between the Windward Islands with Tahiti and Moorea and the Leeward Islands, consisting of Hahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, Bora Bora and Maupiti.

All of them are on the Tahiti cruise circuit and are well supplied with beach hotels and resorts.

Travel to Tahiti could also involve lesser known places, such as Atuona on Hiva Oa in the Marquesas.

Pitcarn Islands – Pitcairn Island is the only inhabited island of the four islands and atolls comprising the British Dependent Territory of Pitcairn between Tahiti and Eastern Island. Ducie, Henderson, and Oeno are uninhabited by humans although large colonies by seabirds dwell there.

Pitcairn is famous mostly as the large refuge of the Bounty mutineers led by Fletcher Christian who settled there in 1790.

Easter Island – is a territory of Chile midway between Tahiti and South America. The Spanish name is Isla de Pascua but to the Polynesian inhabitants it Rapa Nui.

Easter Island is renowned for the huge statues or oai which once lined the island’s shores gazing inland. All were destroyed during the tribal wars which predated European colonization but several dozen heads have since been reerected.

There’s some great hiking and horseback riding to be done along the coast of this intriguing island.

  Cook Islands
  sailing

We are a Cook Islands Expert.

The Cooks Islands lie in the center of the Polynesian triangle about 4,500 km south of Hawaii. They range from towering Rarotonga, the country’s largest island, to the low oval islands of the south and the solitary atolls of the north.

Visitors are rewarded with natural beauty and colorful attractions at every turn. There is motion and excitement on Rarotonga and Aitutaki, peaceful village life on the rest. Since few tourists get beyond the two main islands, a trip to Atiu, Mangaia, or Mauke can be a fascinating experience.

The time is the same as in Hawaii and Tahiti, two hours behinds California and 22 hours behind New Zealand.

Rarotonga is the most populous island in the Cooks Islands and also on the top tourist destinations. Cooks Islands Parliament buildings, as well as the international airport, are located on Rarotonga. The island is surrounded by a lagoon, which extends several hundred yards (meters) to the reef. The south-east part of the island is the most popular with tourist because it is suitable for swimming, snorkeling and boating. With its jagged peaks and deep valleys, fertile slopes and sparkling aquamarine lagoon, Rartonga comes pretty close to the archetype image of paradise. Avarua is the main town on the island of Rarotonga and the commercial centre of the Cooks Island. During the day it has shops, banks, cafes and a bustling atmosphere. It is also the main port and host to many cruising yachts.

Aitutaki has a marvelous lagoon, dotted with sand bars, coral ridges and 21 uninhabited motu (lagoon islets) it is colorful and full of life. Maina Motu offers great snorkeling on the coral formations near its shore and around large powder-white sand bars. Tapuaeta’I (One Foot Island) has a lovely white stretch of beach and brilliant, pale-turquoise water. A visit to Cooks Island is not complete without seeing the beautiful island of Aitutaki, which is less than an hour flight from Rarotonga. The breathtaking allure of its crystal clear turquoise waters and sparkling white beaches is an essential ingredient in any Cook Island holiday. This is a place of unsurpassed natural beauty and tranquilly, providing a simple tonic to sooth away the pressures of the outside world. We usually recommend a minimum stay of 3 days on Aitutaki to truly experience its beauty and a Lagoon cruise on beautiful Aitutaki Lagoon is a must for any visitor. Relax and experience the beauty of Cook Islands at it best.

"Kia Orana" can be used as a greeting or a goodbye because it means "may you live long" – and visitors to the Cooks Islands could well live longer simply because they have experienced the lack of stress known as island time?

Cooks Islands exotic islands with unspoiled secluded white sand beaches await you. Stroll along a soft coral beach at sunset.. leaving your footprints in the sand to be washed away by the tide… gazing at sights you’ve seen before only in your Dreams.

Cooks Islands climate warmth and sunshine can be enjoyed year round. The drier months from April to November have an average maximum temperature of about 26C and an average minimum of about 20C. The more humid months from December to March have an average of 28C maximum.
